Anglican Care New Nurse Graduate Program

Anglican Care offers opportunities to motivated new graduate nurses wanting to participate in Anglican Care’s twelve month development program for Aged Care Nurses. The Anglican Care New Nurse Graduate Program is aimed at providing new graduates with practical learning opportunities that compliment their Bachelor of Nursing. Training will cover a holistic approach to nursing, and will be based on the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council’s National Competency Standards for Registered Nurses. 

Program Structure

• The new nurse graduate will be employed on a full time fixed term contract for 12 months.
• The graduate program will commence February 2012.
• The program consists of two, six month clinical placements at either Carey Bay Village or CA Brown Nursing Home and Hostel.
• The first rotation will be into an Aged Care Unit and will include assessment of the older person, complex care planning and palliative care.
• The second rotation will be in a Dementia/Psychogeriatric Unit caring for people with dementia.
• On the first day of the program the new nurse graduate will attend general orientation and computer training for electronic care planning.
• Two supernumerary days will be provided to the new nurse graduate on commencement of each clinical rotation.

What We Offer

Nurse Preceptor

The new nurse graduate will be provided with the regular and ongoing support of a Nurse Preceptor who will be an experienced and competent role model from the site they are working at.  The Nurse Preceptor will support the new graduate’s socialization into their new environment and enhances learning by teaching, instructing, supervising and assisting the participant at ward level.

Facility Manager

The Director of Nursing at the facility will also provide support to assist the new nurse graduate in achieving their clinical development goals and provide them with on-the-job guidance.

Mentorship

A mentor from the Clinical Practice Unit will provide opportunities to the new nurse graduate to reflect upon and articulate their role; they will facilitate their professional growth by offering information guidance and provide constructive comments to support their career development.

Rostering

Where possible, during the first three months of the program, the new nurse graduate will be rostered to work morning shifts when there is a higher level of staffing ratios and skill mix to provide educational and support services.

New Nurse Graduate Handbook

The new nurse graduate will be provided with a manual containing information on orientation processes and induction requirements; learning objectives required of each placement; legal and ethical issues related to Registered Nurses, assessment processes and complaints procedures.

Staff Development Programs

As an employee of Anglican Care the new nurse graduate will have access to our staff development programs which may include in-service education, self directed learning packages, appropriate external education and library resources.

Nursing Clinical Council Meetings

The new nurse graduate will be invited to attend and participate in Nursing Clinical Council Meetings.

Career Progression and Permanent Employment

On completion of the New Nurse Graduate Program there may be the opportunity for career progression and continued employment at Anglican Care.

To Be Eligible

Essential

• Registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). 
• Desire to pursue a nursing career in Residential Aged Care.
• Understanding of EEO, OHS, CQI and Infection Control principles.
• Aptitude in computer operations.

Desirable

• Previous experience in Residential Aged Care in a care support role.
• Basic knowledge and understanding of Gerontology, Rehabilitation and Palliative Care.
• Basic knowledge and understanding of Dementia Care and Behaviour Management.
• Basic Knowledge and understanding of the Aged Care Act (1997) and the Aged Care Funding Instrument.
